About Us

WGIQ (Centre for Women’s, Gender, Identity and Queer History, previously known as CGIS) was established by the Oxford History Faculty in 2014 to enhance and sustain the work that was being undertaken by a significant number of staff and graduate students in the Faculty. Since then, WGIQ has developed an intellectually compelling programme of seminars, workshops, conferences, and reading groups, which offer a supportive,  collaborative, and welcoming environment in which to explore these exciting areas of scholarship. We serve as a platform from which to build funding applications, establish future collaborations, enhance our teaching, and support the careers of the next generation of students and scholars. We seek to ensure that gender, identity, and subjectivity remain major themes of historical research for which Oxford is known internationally.

WHAT WE DO

WGIQ  provides a lively research hub for academics, graduate students, and undergraduate students who work on themes related to gender, identity, and subjectivity. The Centre is particularly keen to enable conversations and collaborations between historians of different periods, places, and approaches. CGIS also encourages interdisciplinary collaboration by connecting researchers across Oxford University - and beyond - whose  work is relevant to these fields. We seek to introduce students to these approaches at an early stage of their careers at Oxford, and we work to support and inspire historians who wish to develop their interests through undergraduate theses, Masters, and doctoral research.

The Centre’s activities are generously supported by the History Faculty, the Fell Fund, and the Van Houten fund.

WGIQ is based in the Faculty of History, George Street, Oxford, OX1 2RL. All events are held in venues that are wheelchair accessible. If you have other access needs, please email cgis@history.ox.ac.uk.

GET INVOLVED

A central aim of WGIQ is to facilitate dialogue between scholars in Oxford, whose research explores an aspect of gender, identity, and subjectivity. We are also keen to forge partnerships with UK and non-UK based universities. The creation of doctoral studentships and post-doctoral posts in this important area of scholarship relies upon the continued generosity and vision of benefactors. For further information, see our Support Us page. If you would like to find out more, please email cgis@history.ox.ac.uk

If you are a student or researcher at Oxford who would like to be more involved in WGIQ, we welcome applications to join our friendly and diverse steering committee in Trinity each year.  Our undergraduate representatives are normally third-year undergraduates. Our graduate representatives are normally D.Phil. students. We also benefit from the contributions of early career representatives. We will advertise opportunities to the CGIS email list in Trinity. If you have ideas for events or collaborations, do get in touch by emailing cgis@history.ox.ac.uk.
